The Viking Cup is an opportunity for elite international teams to compete under the finest of hockey ideals. The superior competition is characterized by a competitive style where the fundamentals of the game are encountered at advanced levels. Diverse hockey traditions and training techniques from different countries are brought together to contribute to a better game universally.
The Viking Cup promotes goodwill and friendship between hockey players, coaches, team staff, fans and community. It creates and presents a learning experience in sport, cultural exchange and personal development.
Each team will play a round-robin within one of two Divisions to seed teams for a playoff. The top two teams in each Division will then compete in the playoffs for gold, silver and bronze medals. In an eight-team tournament each team is guaranteed a minimum of three games and the four teams entering the playoffs will each play five games.
Teams applying should be comparable to Canadian University or College hockey or the calibre of hockey played in the FISU World Student Games. Having an educational component in an application is intriguing but not a necessity to qualify. FISU age restrictions for participating athletes (17-25 years) apply for the Viking Cup. Countries that are beginning to gain traction in world hockey competition and want to showcase talents to the rest of the world would be strong candidates. Interested teams should make an application as soon as possible (closing date is June 1, 2025).
Camrose is a university city of nearly 20,000 residents. The Viking Cup is played in excellent facilities with a new main arena for close to 3000 spectators and two smaller arenas for training and other games. The Augustana campus is a satellite campus to the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Edmonton, a one-hour drive from Camrose, is Alberta’s capital city and home of the well-known Edmonton Oilers NHL hockey team!
